A proven model for sustainable logistics

The EPAL (European Pallet Association) system is one of the most successful examples of the circular economy in the European logistics sector. Based on the principles of reuse, repair, exchange and recycling, this model has been operating on a large scale for over 30 years.

In 2022, more than 109 million new EPAL pallets were produced, setting a new annual record. At the same time, the volume of repaired pallets remained stable, illustrating the robustness of the maintenance and reuse system. Currently, it is estimated that there are more than 650 million EPAL pallets in circulation worldwide, making it the largest open pallet exchange pool in the world. Each pallet is manufactured to strict standards, including heat treatment to ISPM 15, guaranteeing phytosanitary safety in international trade.

The EPAL system is based on a network of more than 1,600 licensed manufacturers and repairers in over 35 countries. These professionals are subject to regular quality controls by independent bodies such as Bureau Veritas, ensuring consistent pallet quality.

Environmental benefits

EPAL wooden pallets make a significant contribution to reducing the carbon footprint:

  • CO2 storage: the wood used acts as a carbon sink.
  • Waste reduction: thanks to repair and reuse, the life of pallets is extended, limiting the production of waste.
  • Recyclability: at the end of their life, pallets can be recycled, in particular as energy wood or particleboard.

The EPAL system is a perfect example of how the principles of the circular economy can be applied to European logistics. Its longevity, robustness and adaptability make it a benchmark model for the sustainable management of handling materials.
